De Boer's structures star at temporary ice rinks
4 January 2008
De Boer's extensive experience in the semi-permanent structure and marquee sector has led to the company tackling its highest-ever number of temporary ice rink projects. Festive skating assignments
The structure specialist is providing equipment during the festive period at locations across London, as well as in towns and cities throughout the country, including Nottingham, Bristol, Cambridge and Reading. In total, De Boer is involved at 11 locations and is to provide facilities for a twelfth venture – in Leeds – later in January.
Ever-popular structure supplier
De Boer Project Manager Liz Routh said: “In recent years De Boer has developed its role in temporary ice rink projects across the UK. We’re delighted to be back stronger than ever this year, with our busiest season to date.”
Temporary rinks at historic locations
The company has provided structures for six temporary rinks created by client PWR Events Ltd at high-profile locations in and around London. These include facilities at Hampton Court, the Tower of London and Kew Gardens, for which De Boer has supplied bases to the temporary rinks as well as A-frame structures for purposes such as cafes, viewing areas and changing facilities.
Supplying to a Winter Wonderland
De Boer has also supplied an A-frame structure and base at Alexandra Gardens, Windsor, and a base for a temporary rink at the Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich. The final assignment for PWR Events has been in Hyde Park, where De Boer’s A-frame, Pyramid and Chalet structures form part of a spectacular Winter Wonderland attraction in which London’s largest outdoor ice rink sits alongside a host of attractions including toboggan slide, 50-metre observation wheel, carousel and German Christmas market.
A-frames, Pyramids and flooring
Away from the capital, De Boer has worked with client Cambridge on Ice to provide A-frame structures and a rink base at Parkers Piece, Cambridge, and has provided A-frame structures and bases for client Stage Electrics at two locations – at Marwell Zoo near Winchester and at Bristol Zoo. De Boer is also working with Stage Electrics at the Oracle shopping centre, Reading, where a Pyramid structure and flooring have been provided.
Temporary changing facilities
De Boer’s A-frames are being put to a range of uses – including as changing areas, storage and VIP facilities in Nottingham, for a temporary ice rink created in the Old Market Square by client The National Ice Centre.
New Year skating challenge
While the majority of De Boer’s ice rink assignments involve the creation of facilities ahead of Christmas, one further contract – at Millennium Square, Leeds – will call for the supply of structures between January and March 2008 when Leeds City Council recreates its highly popular Ice Cube venture.
Building on Christmas fun
De Boer’s Liz Routh said: “London has now been joined by towns and cities across the country keen to satisfy the public’s growing passion for ice skating. For many people, taking to the ice has become just as much a part of Christmas as Santa and mince pies!”
