De Boer again erects Pink Galaxy structure for 2007 MoonWalk
21 May 2007
De Boer transformed the London skyline by constructing its spectacular Pink Galaxy structure ahead of the Playtex MoonWalk charity event, which took place on May 19th. As large as 2 football pitches
The structure – as large as two football pitches and created entirely in a vivid shade of pink – took shape in Hyde Park in time for 15,000 women to power-walk their way through the capital on Saturday night to raise money for vital breast cancer causes.
Edinburgh next
Walk the Walk is also preparing The MoonWalk Edinburgh. The Pink Galaxy is set to be even bigger than when it was used for last year’s event in the Scottish capital as 10,000 women prepare to take on The MoonWalk Edinburgh challenge.
Organised by Walk the Walk
Both the London and Edinburgh MoonWalks are organised by charity Walk the Walk, a long-time client of De Boer for whom the Pink Galaxy was specially created last year. The charity has raised more than £28 million since its first walk in 1996.
Decorated bras
In each of the events, participants are encouraged to wear elaborately decorated bras and to choose a distance of either 26.1 miles or 13.1 miles for their power-walking challenge.
World record
The MoonWalk has been described as the Mardi Gras of marathons and De Boer’s Pink Galaxy was used for a big pre-walk party before they set off. This year the structure held all 15,000 walkers and 1,500 volunteers as they entered the Guinness World Records for the largest synchronised stretch.
Head-turner
De Boer Sales Manager Kate Hunter said: “The Pink Galaxy proved a real head-turner when it made its debut for Walk the Walk last year. We’re absolutely thrilled to be back in Hyde Park this year – and can’t wait for the structure’s return to Edinburgh.”
Increased size
She added: “The flexible design of the Pink Galaxy allows it to be used in a range of sizes, which means we’ve been able to increase the size of the structure for Edinburgh, to reflect the ever-growing popularity of the Scottish event.”
Over 9,000 square metres
The Pink Galaxy, which is supported by a maximum of 18 huge “King” poles and more than 250 smaller “Queen” poles, was once again being used to its maximum size in Hyde Park. At 152 metres by 60 metres, it provides users with more than 9,000 square metres of floor space.
Vivid pink exterior
The structure, which was manufactured last year specifically for Walk the Walk, stands 26 metres tall. Built by specialist manufacturers in Paris, the exterior has been created in the charity’s vivid pink corporate colour, with a dark blue interior enabling the structure to be used for a variety of other purposes including exhibitions, conferences and cultural gatherings.
Additional facilities
In addition to providing the London event with its main pink structure, De Boer also supplied a number of white A-frame structures for uses such as baggage facilities, guest and press areas, medical centre and kitchen. Walk the Walk also created an information centre and help desk inside a De Boer Chalet structure.
A week to build
De Boer gained access to Hyde Park nine days before the Playtex MoonWalk, with the structure needing to be handed over to Walk the Walk for final fit-out two days before the event gets under way. The thousands of participants assembled in the structure on the evening of Saturday May 19th ahead of their night-time power-walk.
Edinburgh's increased size
Meanwhile, in Edinburgh, where last year a scaled-down version of the structure provided 5,400 square metres of floor space, the Pink Galaxy will this year provide more than 6,000 square metres. The 107-metre by 60-metre structure will offer enough space for the 10,000 walkers due to take place in the Scottish event.
