‘Girl power’ as De Boer’s greatest airshow build takes off

Two women have taken charge of De Boer’s largest-ever European project – creation of the venue for the 2010 Farnborough International Airshow (FIA). 

Massive logistical operation
The massive logistical operation, involving more than 3,600 tonnes of temporary structures forming an exhibition venue spanning over 90,000 square metres, is being spearheaded by Kate Morrison and her colleague Liz Routh – supported by a 25-strong all-male construction team. 

High-profile assignments
Key Account Manager Kate has worked for De Boer for six years and is responsible for a number of the company’s most high-profile assignments including the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. Project Manager Liz, who joined De Boer in 2007, also works on the Chelsea contract and was involved in the build for the 2008 Farnborough International Airshow.

Says Kate: “It is fantastic to be given the opportunity to oversee one of De Boer’s most important global projects. Farnborough International Airshow is a huge logistical operation with a complex build programme. 2010 will be De Boer’s eighth airshow and our experienced crew has developed effective, reliable and proven operating methods over the years which I’m sure will ensure a smooth build programme for this year’s event. 

Great event
“Liz and I are used to project-managing events with our male build teams; it’s just that FIA is on such a bigger scale than our other projects. We are both looking forward to being associated with such a great event.” 

Prominent role

Temporary structures
De Boer commenced its airshow build earlier this month (March) and over the coming weeks the Brackley-based company will erect temporary structures with enough floor space to accommodate London’s mighty Royal Albert Hall no fewer than 30 times! 

Vast range of facilities
The assignment – involving deliveries by more than 200 articulated lorries – will create four huge exhibition halls together with a vast array of corporate hospitality suites, business chalets, public dining areas and a media centre for the Farnborough International Airshow 2010, which takes place between July 19 and 25. 

Iconic aviation events
Farnborough International Airshow is one of the world's most iconic aviation events. The first five days of the show are traditionally trade days only, followed by a weekend where the exhibition is opened to the public. FIA 2008 was a record-breaking year for business with US$88.7 billion worth of orders announced during the show which also featured 165 aircraft in static displays and spectacular flying displays. The public weekend attracted a staggering 153,000 visitors.
